Daniels Bridge Redesign

A proposed redesign of a section of Highway 64 in the Outer Banks, North Carolina.
The Melvin R. Daniels Bridge is a part of Highway 64 and connects Roanoke Island to the Barrier Islands of North Carolina's Outer Banks. Being part of a 5-lane highway, it is dangerous to bike or cross, which led to pedestrian access being permanently closed on one side of the bridge. This limits accessibility and accomodation for forms of transport other than cars. The redesign includes multi-use paths for walking and biking, a signaled crosswalk, and a bus stop as part of a proposed bus route along the road. The redesign takes up the same amount of space as the original road without deviating from local lane width standards.
The solo project was completed over the course of about 6 months and included stages of research into urban planning and local geography, trips to the Outer Banks, conversations with university professors, urban planners, and civil engineers, and pitching and public presentation.
The final project became a 1:35 scale miniature model of the redesign, along with photographs taken to make it look life-sized. It was publicly presented at the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts in Winston-Salem, NC and at ECU's Coastal Studies Institute in the Outer Banks.

The modeling process included using foam, terrain, epoxy resin, 3D printing, and a variety of scenic painting techniques to create materials and textures.
