Silver Sterling & the Elusive Felt Hat

Production Design

Task

Silver Sterling & the Elusive Felt Hat is a noir style film about two mobsters that have a run-in in a haberdashery. My work involved developing the look for three sets - a mobster's office, the store interior, and exterior storefront. In each case, I had to transform a location into a stylized set from a different time period.

Pre-Visualization

3D Models were made in Sketchup based on location dimensions. These specified the layout of set decoration and were crucial when sourcing and sizing furniture and dressing. They were also shared with the director and producers for approval and disucssion of the look of the sets.

Production

With tight turnaround times, installation and decoration for interior sets was done in half a day. After several days of filming, the locations were emptied out and returned to their original condition on a similar timeline.

The store, meant to resemble a set from the classic era of Hollywood, was filled with clothes, accessories, and display pieces including mannequins and a 1930s-era sewing machine. A prop recording device was also made from a repurposed reel-to-reel recorder and attached to the actor with a harness.

Building facades were dressed with signage and displays for the clothing store. The street was also purposely wet down, establishing a cool, rainy night scene.

After the layout of the mobster's office was established, it was dressed out with everything from artwork to documents and empty bullet casings.
